In the last session we looked at Diet and Nutrition , which is the first part of our lifestyle support Stepping Stones
In this Stepping Stone (5), we are going to look at 'how exericse helps with your child's behaviour. There are endless examples of how exercise helps with behavioural problems like ADHD and ADD. One way of explaining this is the impact that exercise has on brain chemistry especially the production of endorphins, the 'feel good factor'. This is caused by large amino acids in the body which block the smaller amino acids that make up serotonin from getting into receptors in the brain. Exercise allows the smaller amino acids in serotonin a chance to get into the receptors and work in the brain because the muscles use up the larger amino acids during exercise so they no longer block the receptors.
HET consultant and ex Olympic Athletics Coach Allan Jones has developed a programme which empowers young people to develop exercise programmes which assist them in generating 'feel good' factor from exercise and meeting government guideline strategies. The opportunity in this programme is for them to work towards becoming HET PHEW coaches to help the family.
