ADHD tests – What ADHD testing really tells us.
Posted On 21/08/2009 12:56:20 by administrator

Very often for certain conditions we can go along to the doctors and have a blood test that tells us how things are and then we have options about what we do about it.

ADHD tests are not like this! Many parents approach me and say should they have their child ADHD tested. Well the answer to this is to first of all, understand that any ADHD test is just a check list of behavioural symptoms. If your child scores high on the questions about being constantly on the go, not being able to concentrate and not thinking things through before they act and have a track record of this for over 6 months then they probably will get diagnosed with ADHD. Your child’s teacher will also be asked to fill out a questionnaire on this.

And that is all an ADHD test is! Ticks on a sheet!!!

Now the difference between this formal ADHD test and our HET consutation questionnaires is that we are looking at your child’s behaviour from a lot of different perspectives. We find out what triggers those behaviours how the behaviours are different in certain situations and with certain people and then we get down to identifying the underlying cause NOT SUPRESSING THE SYMPTOMS and that  is precisely where the traditional ADHD test takes us.

By working through the consultation questionnaires in Stepping Stone 1 we are able to identify the behaviours that are causing problems and then set goals and targets around reducing those behaviours and increasing the behaviours that we want to see that are more helpful to your child being in a happier space!

The other stepping stones on the HET journey are all about different safe and natural ways that do not suppress the behavioural symptoms with medications that can have harmful side effects but to celebrate releasing the underlying causes for these behaviours which can be down to a number of reasons. This approach enables families to work together with those causes and put helpful  strategies in place as a the tool box for life approach.

A good example of this is a little boy I worked with a few years ago – he had ADHD according to the ‘test’ and this was complicated by having a condition known as Tourettes syndrome. This is characterised by uncontrollable bouts of shouting out, often inappropriate swearing and tics, involuntary muscle spasms in the face.

This young man responded extremely well on the programme and was under close supervision of his doctor. Within 6 weeks of taking Bach Flower remedies his Dad was up at the school demanding to know why he hadn’t been put on the programme before. The difference was  that they could go out together as a family unit again – sit in restaurants and enjoy a family meal together. The change in their family life style was truly transformative. However, what did make a huge difference with this young man was with his Tourettes. What he discovered was that when he started to keep a diary of what he ate he could monitor his feelings around what he had eaten. At the age of 13 he was showing more responsibility in terms of understanding additives on the packet than most of the adults I know. Certain food made him feel awful and when he felt awful he had bouts of his behaviour come back. When he followed he programme he did extremely well and when he came off it his behaviours deteriorated.

Literally, the proof of the pudding was in the eating. Following a HET programme transformed this young man’s life:
I have included some notes from my final interview with his Dad after he had been on the programme for 3 months:

I spoke with J’s father who is very pleased with the programme. The flower drops in particular have had a very calming effect on J. He still flies off the handle occasionally but it is not too bad.

They noticed an 80% improvement in J’s behaviour to start off with but since he has been of the drops at Easter there has been a slight deterioration and he has reverted to a 60% improvement.

They feel that they have a normal little boy now, he is happier and seems a completely different child.

They said they want details of the nutritional programme and would like to continue with this after the project..

He is no longer badly behaved at home

He does things for himself

He is no longer angry and agitated

He is aware of additives in food and will read labels

He is eating fruit.

His general health has improved greatly

Concentration has improved

Energy levels have  improved

Diet and weight has improved

J is in control of things now.
