Supporting ADHD
Only a few short weeks ago I set up HET website in response to people who told me they felt alone and cut off because of their kid’s behaviour. Already we have a thriving community in regular contact with each other and accessing the help and support available through the site – so a big thank to you all and to ‘Steve The Techie’ for making it all happen.
I have left the first of our newsletters until now, as I wanted to give everyone a chance to settle back in after the kids return to school.
This is a time of change for your child, your child’s teacher and for YOU! And change can be a difficult time! This is really the most important time, right NOW to build a relationship with your child’s teacher, so you can work together in best supporting your child. This is done through sharing information, agreeing desirable and undesirable behaviours, having agreed expectations around your child’s behaviour and also putting into place consistent boundaries at home and school.
The home / school consultations that we cover in Stepping Stone 1 are a brilliant place to get this happening and this is the time to do it, right just after your child has settled back in. Now is the time to make the appointment go into school and go through the consultation, agreeing goals for your child together – this connection is so important and the fact that your child understands that there is that continuity between home and school. This is all addressed in HET Stepping Stone 1!
The film I am attaching this week is an interview I did on the HET radio show with a Mom who had no dialogue or understanding from the school about her child. I met this lady during the year I was setting up a family retreat in Somerset. She is now training in special education as a teacher and told me she wished she’d had HET when her child was younger. He wrecked 3 houses and threatened her regularly with knives and scissors. No one would listen to her or understand, especially the school!

Well it’s not my intention to bombard you on a daily basis with emails you won’t have time to read. Just once a week with a film or something else to look forward to and I Iook forward to catching up any time you’d like to meet on the HETwebsite!
