Treating ADHD
Posted On 30/09/2009 16:05:37 by administrator

Today as I was doing some reading up on trends in behaviour problems like ADHD behaviours, in order to provide a great service to our community through HETwebsite. I came across a website with some articles on it.

A particular article caught my eye because it touched on something that I have so often found happening in families with young children demonstrating challenging behaviours and that is  the tension and stress that builds up  amongst family members. Of course, the child concerned can pick up on this and play parents off against each other and sadly this has resulted in couples splitting up.

This of course makes matters worse and then the child does not only go through the division of loyalty but can also be used as a pawn in a game of dynamics playing off with the parents.

One of the important things that we do in HET is to support all family members in dealing with the stress, the issues and the dynamics that surface when they are presented with difficult and challenging behaviour from children. Our stepping stones 1 + 2 look at agreeing desirable and undesirable behaviours and setting goals together and putting in a structure of consistent boundaries in order to ensure the structure is adhered to.

Anyway, back to the article I found. A brilliant and well written, helpful article but right over the top of the page was an advertisement.

What was it for?

Concerta – A medication for ADHD

What is the implication? Subtle though it was heading the page for perceptual awareness - this message tells parents that putting their child on concerta will save their marriage.

Hmmmmm……!

What are the side effects of Concerta?

stomach pain

anger, intolerance, nervousness, aggression, sadness

drug dependence

dizzy spells

headache

tics

inability to sleep and tiredness

No appetite

increased coughing, sinusitis, upper respiratory tract
infection

sickness

allergy

increased blood pressure

psychosis (abnormal thinking or hallucinations).

Concerta should not be used by people with marked
anxiety or agitation, glaucoma, or tics or during
treatment with monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

What do you think about this?
